What Confidence Looks Like in Tween Girls

Confidence in tween girls doesn’t always look like what we expect. It’s not just about raising a hand in class or performing in front of a crowd. It’s often quieter, deeper, and sometimes easy to miss. As caring adults, recognizing these subtle signs of confidence helps us encourage true it instead of chasing surface-level achievements.

What real confidence looks like in tweens:

  • Trying something new—even if it might go wrong
  • Walking away from a hurtful friendship
  • Speaking up when it matters, not just when it’s easy
  • Taking a break without giving up
  • Being okay with being different

What confidence isn’t:

  • Always being bubbly, outgoing, or “on”
  • Doing things perfectly
  • Never having doubts or fears

What we can do as caring adults:

  • Notice the quiet wins: “I saw how you stood up for yourself. That took courage.”
  • Praise effort over outcome: “You really stuck with that even when it got hard.”
  • Create space to talk about fears without brushing them off
  • Celebrate mistakes as part of learning and growing
  • Connect by sharing real-life stories of your own trials and successes. This helps her build her confidence and resilience

At BaseCamp Girl, we believe that every girl deserves to see herself as capable, courageous, and whole. Our animated video series and printable journals, specifically about Confidence, Self-confidence, Friendship, Bullies & Mean Girls, and Resilience, help tweens build confidence from the inside out—by discovering their strengths, celebrating their successes, and learning how to keep going when things feel hard.
